About

Hi!

My name is Theodora. I’m a 29-year-old single lady living in NYC. Crap. I’m 30.

I love food. I used to think that I loved food too much, but I think I just loved the wrong foods. My diet was full of heavy, fried food and empty calories and my gym membership went unused month after month.

In 2009, I decided to change all that. I lost 50 pounds and gained a love for healthy food, exercise and myself that I didn’t have before. When I started blogging, I documented everything I ate and wrote about all of my workouts. Because I am a busy city girl, I don’t always cook–so you won’t find a ton of recipes here. What you will find are realistic ways to stay healthy on the go.

I typically blog–usually about once a day these days–about a mix of topics. I no longer blog about every single meal, because I’ve definitely found what works for me, and I eat a lot of the same things these days. These days, I show the highlights of what I eat and talk about some of the fun NYC group fitness classes I do–and just some of the fun NYC stuff I do.

Like attending balls at The Plaza hotel.

In order to lose the weight, I followed these nutrition guidelines. Once I had dropped the weight, I relaxed my way of eating a bit, but I still love to fill my diet with lots of fresh produce, lean protein, healthy fat (mmm, avocado!) and whole grains. I try to eat in moderation these days.

I started running as a form of cardio three years ago, and I became obsessed. I’ve since run a whole bunch of half-marathons, three full marathons and countless other races.

I managed to parlay my blogging and journalism backgrounds into a career as a social media strategist. I am a huge dork, and I am mildly obsessed with social media. I started this blog to teach myself more about social media, and I still consider it a playground to learn more about social and digital media. I love learning about new plugins and tools that can make my blog more accessible to readers.

I hope you enjoy what you read here! Feel free to e-mail me at theodora@losingweightinthecity.com if you have any questions or just want to say hi!

  2. Very cool, Theodora! I’m always excited to find someone who has successfully done what I preach :) The awareness of your food that you show looks like the key to permanent health to me. Oh, and you really shoot some impressive food pix. Keep up the good work.

Hi Theodora. Found you on fannetastic food blog and thought I would tell you how much I enjoy your blog. I’m an older lady (61) and I have recently lost 50 pounds and have added walking, kbells, zumba to my daily life. I am always looking around for more food and exercise ideas that I might be able to do. I can’t run but I can walk. Started out in January 1 mile now I am up to 5 miles each day. Looking forward to reading your blog daily.

I am a senior Sociology major at Whitman College in Walla Walla, Washington. I am currently working on my thesis project, in which I am studying self-presentation in the blogosphere. I have selected five healthy living blogs to study, and yours happens to be one of them. My project is twofold in that I am going to do both a content analysis of the blogs I have selected, and I would like to interview each blogger. Would you be interested in participating in my study? Participation will require no more than an hour of your time, and interviews will be scheduled at a time that is convenient to you. Thank you in advance for your time!

    Sincerely,
    Alyssa Breetwor

    Hi Theodora!

I’m a sophomore college and trying to get started on a weight lost plan of my own. I’ve gained weight recently due to stress and lack of exercise. I am just like you, I LOVE food, especially chocolate, avocado on toast, and a yummy banana in the morning, so I’m trying to find a balance between the good and the bad. I honestly could never give up sweets or my daily dark chocolate. Recently, I have also not been able to find the motivation to work out, but I set myself up with Hal Higdons 10K novice training plan, and starting Monday I’m going for it! (Also going to attempt to run this weekend…)

I’d love to read how you got started, but your “Where I started.” link doesn’t work!
Either way, any tips for me besides your “This is what works for me”? To keep motivation etc.?

I’d love to hear your thoughts. You are seriously such an inspiration to me, I’m really excited to get this thing going! Scared to step on that scale though….

Thank you for inspiring men and women everywhere!
    Sincerely,
    Taryn Inglis

Ps. Please email me if you ever get the chance, I’d love to chat and hear what you have to say! :)

    Hi Theodora,
What I feel the most from you is a great energy.
I gave a name to what you have experienced. I called it the Diet-Gasme.
The reason is because everytime you are saying the word “diet” people tend to think about “pain, lack of pleasure…” in fact a diet is the fuel to live to the fullest, so each bite you are eating should be associated to an “Orgasm” to live…
I am also from New York (After years in Paris) so this city migth have something magic… ;-)
Congrats for changing you life !

    Hi Theodora,

Your story is great, as a 20-something trying to find her footing at work and in her personal life I can totally relate to your moment at the beginning of your journey when you looked in the mirror and felt everything was lost just because you weren’t happy with your body…I’m so excited that you’ve made this awesome change and that so many things have fallen into place. I’m training for my first half marathon now and slowly losing the weight. Keep on keeping on and thanks for being real!

I came across your blog and was compelled to write you. Congratulations on losing 50 pounds. My mom was overweight for many years and unfortunately lost the battle due to diabetes over 10 years ago. I am a personal trainer with a coaching backround and my wife and I are in the process of writing a series of small, to the point books on how to lose weight with specific conditions. These are some of our possible topics: weight loss with chronic fatigue, weight loss with diabetes, weight loss with asthma, weight loss with joint pain, and weight loss with Parkinsons disease. If we were to write an E- book on any of these topics, would you consider promoting it on your blog? We would, of course, split the profits with you of any books sold on your blog.

Looking forward to hearing from you.

    In health,

    Stephen and Marie Fulgham
