That is a chicken bowl from Bbap for lunch, with zucchini (today’s veggie o’the day!), broccoli, carrots and brown rice. That is also a visualization of how those little purchases add up wayyyyy too quickly, and a reminder to myself to BUY SOME FOOD, DAMNIT. I had Pump for dinner instead. Oops. But I just ordered FreshDirect. Really.

Getting Skinny Is The Second Act Of A Fat Girl's Tragedy

I remember being 5’5” and 199 pounds when I entered high school. I wasn’t big enough to be antagonized by classmates, but I was big enough to be completely invisible.

I remember trying on my first pair of Size 1 jeans in front of the mirror. I still thought my arms were too big and my hips were too wide.

I remember new friends expressing their jealousy of my size. That never made me feel good.

I remember releasing my forehead to my mat in yoga class and offering up my weight turmoil to a higher power. I couldn’t grapple with it anymore.

A poignant piece on Jezebel about the rollercoaster that is weight loss and grappling with body image issues.

Never Say You’re Sorry…

…for food.

Last night, I met up with the awesome Meredith at Spitzer’s, a fun bar on the Lower East Side for some Allagash Whites, and media and Tumblr gossip. We reaffirmed how small NYC actually is and how much we both love everything Lilly Pulitzer and Vineyard Vines.

We split fries:

and salad:

Were the fries healthy? Nope. Were they good? Yup. I made a green monster when I got home to get in my spinach for the day.

This morning was started with some burpees, mountainclimbers and squats, and was definitely a venti kinda morning, with a side of my name spelled wrong:

Today’s veggie? ZUCCHINI! (Sadly, not like my mom makes it—breaded, with spaghetti sauce.) Today’s workout? 10.5 mile bike ride.

I caressed the snooze button this morning, again and again and again, so I definitely didn’t squeeze in a workout this morning, and I have plans after work, so I hit the gym at lunchtime for some intervals on the treadmill. (I also did some crunches and bicycles this morning—Theodora 2.5/Operation Joel Kicks My Ass has me do a few strength moves every morning to jumpstart my metabolism.)
I grabbed a turkey burger, sweet potato wedges and green beans for lunch. I talked with Tina this morning about bringing lunch, and I realized I wasn’t practicing what I was preaching in the least. Bringing. Lunch. For. The. Rest. Of. The. Week. (And not soba noodles!)
Also, I’m definitely freaking out about my marathon. I’m trying to talk to Laurel a lot about marathon-ing, read the Runner’s World forums, and follow Caitlin at Healthy Tipping Point’s advice about not hating your long workouts. Because I have 15 miles to run this weekend, and my current strategy of freaking out isn’t working.
And the vegetable of the day: spinach. To be worked in at dinner.
How do you get yourself in the game mentally for workouts (or really, anything in life) that you’re nervous about?

Is it an experience…or just food?

This morning, as the caffeine began to course through my veins (whew), I thought about how excited I was to eat my veggie flatbread:

I don’t mind sometimes when I don’t have time to make breakfast in the mornings, because sometimes I look forward to the deliciousness that is this flatbread or the infamous spinach feta wrap.

I still love food. A lot.

I still think about it a ton.

My friend and I had a conversation the other day about eating…as we often do. She had lost a lot of weight, too, at one point, and I think it’s hard to totally reverse that importance food has in your life, even if you fill your life with healthier foods. We were talking about how it can be hard to have something like steamed broccoli with a plain chicken breast. We want our meals to be experiences.

But there are some people out there—Joel, my dad—to whom it’s just food. It doesn’t have to be an experience.

What about you? Do you have to have a culinary experience when you eat…or is it just food to you?

So, yeah. Soba noodles are good for you, but I need to introduce a little biodiversity into my food, because I think I’ve had soba noodles every day for the past 10 days. No dinner picture because I had wine for dinner and a lovely night. Good for my soul, maybe not my waistband…

Keeping with trying to stay dairy-free, I made some overnight oats in a jar without the Greek yogurt. I used: oats (obviously), soy milk, flaxseed, sunflower seed butter and a banana. It was an interesting combo, but I still prefer WITH yogurt…

Pretend that tofu is salmon and you’ll have my dinner for tonight. (Yeah, I reused the photo.) I’ve definitely been on a soba noodle roll lately. And with good reason—they’re great for you. Lots of protein and other health benefits.
I have three very busy weeks/weekends in a row coming up (and had quite a few busy ones in early July) so I had a nice, quiet weekend full of running, mani/pedi, a LivingSocial massage, quality time with friends and Bailey. And myself. It’s nice to actually feel rested up after a weekend!
This morning, I had a 20-mile bike ride on my schedule for cross-training. I don’t know if I’ve mentioned this before, but I’m ridiculously clumsy. So, after my doorman helped me attach my lock to my bike, I made it less than a mile before I wiped out. My confidence shaken (I’m still getting used to biking), I decided to half my workout. I’ll do the rest before work tomorrow.

emilyposts asked: Greek yogurt. What's your take?

LOVE. And it’s really good for you, too.

I’m personally trying to stay away from it (and all other dairy) for the next few weeks in hopes of quieting my very-upset-as-of-late tummy.

And now I’m craving some. Thanks.

About Me

Foodbuzz

After seven years (and probably seven million calories) of living in D.C., I moved to NYC in August 2008. After a few months of eating my way through the city, I realized this had to stop and nipped my temptations in the bud. Here's the story of how a girl lost 50 pounds in the most tempting city known to woman. My next big challenge? The Chicago Marathon. 10.10.10.
